Here’s a few of the stories we’ve been following this past week:

The Columbia Spectator had a fantastic piece about our “We’re Going to the Principal’s Office” campaign.

The ever-fabulous Liz Benjamin picked up our Action Fund’s endorsement of Peralta.

As did Azi Parbarah at the NY Observer.

WFUV Radio interviewed PPNYC’s Traci about the Peralta-Monserrate rade.

Meanwhile, the New York Times ran an editorial against Hiram Monserrate.

Who officially kicked off his campaign last week.

Even though he is now 100% completely officially expelled from the State Senate.

And the DNC is angry at him for stealing Obama’s “Yes We Can” slogan.

However, Monserrate was loudly booed at his first debate against Peralta.

And Liz Benjamin says Peralta is in the lead.

As does the NY Observer.

In fact, according to a recent poll, only 13% of voters support Monserrate.

In other news, the Metro paper covered those anti-abortion subway ads.

And finally, NYC picked a design winner for the city’s free condoms.

This past week, the New York Times ran a huge editorial on the various restrictive laws on abortion happening all over the country.

It also called for the anti-abortion democrats to give up some ground on health care reform.

The Washington Post says that Universal Health Care tends to drastically lower the abortion rate.

In unfortunate news, Utah has now criminalized “intentional” miscarriages.

There’s a new study on how women on the birth control pill live longer.

That’s all we’ve got. What have you been reading?

Next Tuesday, March 16, there will be a special election to replace State Senator Hiram Monserrate. Monserrate, who was expelled from the State Senate after being convicted of domestic abuse, is running for his seat again.
That’s why we need you.

If you live in State Senate district 13 (that’s Corona, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst, Lefrak City and Woodside folks) it’s essential that you make your voice heard. Our Action Fund has endorsed his opponent, Jose Peralta, and is asking everyone to use Facebook and Twitter to spread the word. Check out their website for more information on the election, as well as where you can vote!

Because really, enough is enough with this culture of violence against women in Albany.

Today, March 10, is the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers. It was set aside in 1996 to commemorate the 1993 assassination of Dr. David Gunn, the first provider murdered by an anti-abortion extremist. This month, and especially today, we pause and honor the men and women who put their lives at risk to make reproductive choice a reality.

No one should ever have to put their lives at risk in order to provide basic health care. Yet somehow, that’s the reality of the world we live in today.

So today, to all of the health care providers out there who persist in providing services to those who need them, thank you.

Here are a few of the news stories we’ve been following in the past week:

It’s International Women’s Day! Feministing has some fantastic coverage/roundups of what’s been going on.

The PPNYC Action Fund has endorsed Jose Peralta in the March 16 special election in Queens! read about it in the Queens Gazette.

I’m sure you know all about PPNYC’s fantastic We’re Going to the Principal’s Office campaign, to push for sex ed to be taught to NYC students. Well, parenting writer Lenore Skenazy has tweeted about it!

Anti-choice candidate Harold Ford has dropped out of the NY Senate race.

Ford had an op ed in the NY Times explaining why.

A number of people (including the New Yorker) are calling for Governor Patterson to resign.

There is a PAC targeting people in the New York State Legislature who voted against Marriage equality, particularly Hiram Monserrate.

NY Magazine is accusing Monserrate of running on a platform of homophobia.

Meanwhile, the ever fantastic Liz Benjamin breaks down the Peralta/Monserrate race in more detail.

Obama’s health care bill is resting on anti-abortion votes again, apparently.

Although he is trying to pass health care by focusing on cost and savings.

And also by pushing for an “up or down” vote on health care.

The NY Times has a helpful road map for passage of health care reform in the final weeks

The NY Times ran several Letters to the Editor in response to the race and abortion article.

Utah was considering legislation that would criminalize miscarriages, but withdrew it.

And there’s a new public opinion poll out about abortion.

That’s all we’ve got. What have you been reading?

Chances are, even if you’ve never been sexually active, you know what they are. They’re one of the only forms of birth control that also helps reduce your risk of sexually transmitted infections. And when nearly 19 million new sexually transmitted infections occur each year, that’s no small feat.

This week, February 14 – 21, is national condom week. Which means it’s the perfect time to have a conversation with your partner about condoms. Or, if you want, you can join PPNYC activists in distributing free condoms throughout New York City.

Not happy with the condoms you’re using? If you’re ready to move beyond the freebies, our friends at Babeland have a great selection, rated by users. Or, if you just need a little help with usage, check out the video below for a refresher course in how to put on a condom.

Here’s what we’ve been paying attention to:

You may have seen, but our CEO Joan Malin had an op ed in The Huffington Post and RH Reality Check on the importance of conversation.

Feministing carried a post with the main points on their site.

Our Vice President of education, Haydee Morales, had an op ed on the same subject in El Diario.

Apparently, the Department of Homeland Security was monitoring both pro- and anti-choice groups for threat levels last year.

The NY State Senate voted to expel Senator Hiram Monserrate.

You can see his speech here.

RH Reality Check has a good roundup of how Obama’s budget affects women’s health.

And Dick Cheney is calling for a repeal of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy.

That’s all we’ve got. What have you been reading?
